AYP Connect eMAR

About us

We are a pharmacy, not a software company.

AYP Healthcare has spent eight years dispensing for care homes: making up monitored dosage trays, printing seals, packing deliveries and answering the phone when something is missing at half past five on a Friday.

What we do

We supply care homes with their residents' medicines. In practice that means a great deal more than handing over boxes: reading every prescription as it changes, making up 28-day trays one blister at a time, printing the seals that go on them, keeping track of where each home is in its cycle, working out what to order and when, and taking back what is no longer needed.

It also means knowing each home's routine — what time their rounds run, which residents need their tablets crushed, who will not take anything from a stranger, which manager wants a phone call and which wants an email. That is not something a supplier can do at a distance, and it is the part we are proudest of.

Why we started building software

Because we kept watching the same thing happen. A home would take on an electronic MAR system from a software company, and we would carry on sending trays that the system knew nothing about. Every medicine had to be typed in twice — once by us to dispense it, once by the home to chart it. A change from the GP would reach one of us before the other. The seal on the tray said one thing and the screen said another, and somebody had to spot it.

And the homes that could not afford an eMAR were choosing between paper and a pharmacy that could subsidise one — which is how we lost homes we had looked after for years, to suppliers who knew nothing about them.

So we are building the record that goes with the medicines we already send. Not as a product to sell, but because the gap between the tray and the chart is ours to close.

What being a pharmacy changes

Everything in AYP Connect was built by people who have made up a tray. The seal print copies our own cards to the millimetre. The system knows a liquid cannot go in a blister, that a 28-day cycle starts on a fixed weekday and never drifts, and that a pod of seven with one refusal is one blister and seven separate records.

Those are not features somebody thought of in a meeting. They are the things that go wrong.
